On the Friday after Ascension the Elfstedenroei marathon traditionally takes place. The route passes the 11 Frisian cities and is open to experienced rowers. The journey is almost 210 km long and the challenge is to complete this distance in a C2 within 24 hours. Many participants do this in relay form. Two rowers and a mate / woman row alternately about 10 km from the route. On Friday evening around 8 pm the start will be at the Prinsentuin in Leeuwarden, which means that the boats will soon enter the dark night. The sunrise is usually after Sneek and then there is a long day through the vast Frisian landscape. On Saturday, the fastest rowers will be back in Leeuwarden around 15.00 hours and of course there are always teams that do not come within the time limit and therefore do not receive the coveted ElfstedenRoeiMarathon cross.
